Your First Look at the “FF #1”

FF Teaser“The Future Foundation” Takes Shape

Marvel has released a preview of FF#1 by Jonathan Hickman and Steve Epting in which the remnants of the Fantastic Four, Marvel’s First Family of Comics, replace the departed Human Torch with Spider-Man and form a new supergroup known as The Future Foundation. The $3.99 issue ships on March 23rd with four variant covers (and a blank cover) available.

FF TeaserThe preview begins with a cryptic page involving a splinter group of the scientific terrorist organization A.I.M. (Advanced Idea Mechanics). Led by Dr. Forson and dressed in their traditional yellow “beekeeper” decontamination suits this group begins to engage in “spatial tunneling” in search of “new ideas,” and with no fear of “a fundamental reordering of things,” a definite hint that there will be time traveling element to this saga.

FF TeaserThe scene shifts to the Baxter Building where Reed Richards is watching a holographic message from Johnny Storm recorded before his death and urging that Peter Parker/Spider-Man should be his replacement.

FF TeaserIn the third page Reed gives his assent to Johnny’s request and looks out the window, where a group that includes a number of alien creatures replaces the Fantastic Four logo with that of the Future Foundation and Reed intones “So this is tomorrow.”

The next page is a single panel that shows Spidey in his traditional red and blue togs swinging through what appears to be the stone canyons of contemporary New York.

The fifth page shows Spidey landing of the top of the Baxter Building, but finding no visible means of entry.

In the final page Sue Richards appears in circular elevator and bids Spidey to join her. The last panel shows Spidey and Sue heading into the depths of the building. Still to come is the explanation of how Spidey gets that white suit.

The line based on the television series will follow in November, with figures based on Deputy Rick Grimes, Daryl Dixon, Zombie Walker, and Zombie Biter.

Official press release:
McFarlane Toys to Bring “THE WALKING DEAD" Action Figure Lines to Fans Worldwide
Collectibles from AMC’s original TV Series and Robert Kirkman’s Bestselling Comic Coming Fall 2011
Tempe, Ariz.— February 10, 2011 - In one the most creative action figure collaborations of 2011, McFarlane Toys announced today two separate deals concerning the licensing rights of “The Walking Dead.” The first is with AMC to create action figures based on the original series that premiered on the network in October of last year. The second is with Robert Kirkman to also create action figures based on the comic-book series created by him. This is the first time action figures have been produced and both lines are available to retailers this Fall.
“Kirkman has created a world that is macabre and suspenseful with deeply-drawn characters: both human and zombies,” said Todd McFarlane, McFarlane Toys, creative force and CEO. “Working with the creative talents of Kirkman and AMC, we have planned figures lines that authentically represent both the television and comic series – including mind-blowing details, likenesses and play action. We want to push the envelope so that the true essence of ‘The Walking Dead’ series is captured.”
The first series of deluxe 6-inch figures is releasing in September 2011, includes four fan-favorite characters from the Image comic book including:
THE WALKING DEAD Series 1
Officer Rick Grimes
Michonne
Zombie Lurker
Zombie Roamer

The second series of deluxe 6-inch figures is revealed in November 2011 and introduces four figures based on AMC’s original drama including:
THE WALKING DEAD Series 2
Deputy Rick Grimes
Daryl Dixon
Zombie Walker
Zombie Biter

Each human figure includes multiple interchangeable accessories and several points of articulation for limitless possibility and customization. Each zombie figure features unique, gory, play action such as exploding heads and removable limbs. Figures are expected to sell for around $14.99 at retailers nationwide.
“I simply cannot contain my excitement over working with McFarlane Toys,” said Robert Kirkman, creator of “The Walking Dead” comic-book series. “For nearly two decades McFarlane Toys have proven themselves to be leading the pack when it comes to making cool looking, innovative toys, and I'm thrilled that they're going to continue to do so with ‘The Walking Dead.”
AMC’s “The Walking Dead” is based on the comic book series written by Robert Kirkman and published by Image Comics. The series tells the story of the months and years that follow after a zombie apocalypse. It follows a group of survivors, led by police officer Rick Grimes, who travel in search of a safe and secure home. The comic goes on to explore the challenges of life in a world overrun by zombies who take a toll on the survivors, and sometimes the interpersonal conflicts present a greater danger to their continuing survival than the zombies that roam the country. Over time, the characters are changed by the constant exposure to death and some grow willing to do anything to survive. AMC’s “The Walking Dead” attracted 3.5 million adults in the 18-49 demo making it the most watched drama series in basic cable history for the demo. The series was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Television Series – Drama.
McFarlane Toys will unveil more of the figures at this weekend's Toy Fair 2011 convention, so keep it locked to MTV Splash Page for more images of "The Walking Dead" toys!

Diamond, iVerse Teaming Up to Offer Digital Content Via Comic Shops

Imagine a future where readers and fans can visit their local comic shop to buy not just physical copies of new comics, but also digital editions that aren’t available anywhere else, and can be viewed in multiple platforms including iPhone, iPad, web, and others.
That future is coming soon as Diamond Comic Distributors (DCD) – the world’s largest distributor of English-language comic books, graphic novels and related pop-culture merchandise – joins forces with iVerse Media – the pioneer of digital comics and creators of the popular ComicsPLUS reader – to empower 2,700+ brick and mortar comic shops to sell digital content.
Plans call for day-and-date digital editions to sell exclusively at comic shops for 30 days for about $1.99, with “Digital Plus” editions – digital copies available with the purchase of a hard copy – expected to sell for $.99.
Thanks to a simple but technologically robust code redemption system, retailers will need only an internet connection and a printer to participate. They will have no inventory risk or carrying costs and will retain a significant portion of each sale, with billing occurring on their regular DCD invoices. Retailers with websites will also be able to profitably sell a wide range of digital back issue comics and graphic novels.
Diamond Executive VP and COO Chuck Parker had this to say: “Digital comics are creating opportunities for publishers to grow the comic market. Our task, as we see it, has been to structure a program that empowers comic retailers to play a role in this growth and, at the same time, make money selling digital content. We think we’ve accomplished that with this initiative, and we look forward to feedback from retailers and publishers alike to help us succeed in this endeavor.”
iVerse CEO Michael Murphey added: “We are proud to be helping Diamond develop systems which will immediately enable comic shop retailers at any level of technical ability to easily sell digital comics. We are also very excited about the potential of this new venture to create many creative print-to-digital and digital-to-print promotional possibilities.”
Publishers already on-board with the program include: Ape Entertainment, Archie Comics, Aspen Comics, Bluewater Productions, Broadsword Comics, Hermes Press, IDW Publishing, Moonstone Comics, NBM Publishing, Papercutz, Red 5 Comics, Studio Foglio, Titan Books, TOKYOPOP, Top Cow Productions and Top Shelf Productions. Talks with other publishers are continuing, and the first comic shop digital editions are slated to debut in July, 2011.
“Direct Market retailers have always been IDW’s most important market and we’re very pleased to be working with Diamond and iVerse to include them in the digital distribution of our books,” said Ted Adams, CEO/Publisher IDW Publishing.
Dave Bowen, Director of DCD’s new Diamond Digital division, said: “We invite all publishers to join our effort, whether with all of their books or a portion of their line. All we ask is that they give comic shops a 30-day head-start on selling whatever digital content they chose to make available through the program.”

Casting Notes: Eva Green Gets “Dark Shadows” Nod

Jesse McCartney in “Locke & Key”

Sexy Bond girl Eva Green, who broke Daniel Craig/James Bond’s heart in Casino Royale, has landed the female lead in Tim Burton’s resurrection of the 1960s vampire soap opera Dark Shadows. According to Deadline, Green has won the key role of Angelique a powerful witch ensnared in a love/hate relationship with vampire Barnabas Collins, who will be played in full Goth drag by Johnny Depp. Jackie Earle Haley (Human Target) and Bella Heathcoate are also in talks for major roles in the film according to Deadline.

With remakes of Dark Shadows, The Thing, Scream and so many other vintage horror films, it’s easy to forget that occasionally Hollywood will try something new, especially on the small screen. Case in point is Fox’s adaptation of Joe Hill’s IDW horror comic, Locke & Key. According to Deadline, actor/singer Jesse McCartney has landed the role of Ty, the oldest of the Locke children. His deal completes a cast that includes Miranda Otto as his mother Nina, and Sarah Bolger and Skylar Gaertner as his siblings Kinsey and Bode.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Talks for “Dark Night Rises”

Role Uncertain

Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who played a key role in Christopher Nolan’s Inception, is in talks to join the cast the The Dark Knight Rises, the final film in Nolan’s Batman trilogy. Nolan is set to begin filming Dark Knight Rises in early May.

According to Deadline, there is no word on what role Gordon-Levitt will play, though the smart money is on the impish actor playing “The Riddler.” The DKR cast announced so far includes Christian Bale (Batman), Anne Hathaway (Selina Kyle/Catwoman), and Tom Hardy (Bane).

Diamond Announces Top Products For January 2011

The Human Torch sacrificed his life to save his teammates and the Earth in January's Fantastic Four #587, sending the long-running Marvel Comics title to the top of January's comic book sales charts according to Diamond Comic Distributors, the world's largest distributor of comics, graphic novels, and pop-culture merchandise.

Thanks in part to the strong sales on Fantastic Four #587 from writer Jonathan Hickman and artist Steve Epting, Marvel Comics was the leading comic book publisher in January with a Dollar Market Share of 39.06% and a Unit Market Share of 42.37%. Image Comics had their strongest showing in over three years, with Dollar Share of 7.60%.

Sales of comic books and graphic novels fell in the post-Christmas season, with January's comic books sales declining by 27.70% from December and graphic novel sales falling by 32.41%.

Jack Horner's adventures in a world where forgotten technology is treated like forbidden magic formed the basis of Jack of Fables Volume 8: The Fulminate Blade, the latest collected volume of Bill Willingham and Matthew Sturges' spin-off of Willingham's best-selling Fables series, giving DC Comics' Vertigo imprint the best-selling graphic novel in January.

More characters from DC Comics' crossover event Blackest Night, including Black Lantern Superman and Red Lantern Mera, starred in DC Direct's Blackest Night Series 7 Action Figure series, January's best-selling Toy product to comic’s specialty retailers.

NECA/WizKids' DC HeroClix: 75th-Anniversary Expansion series, which features characters taken from DC Comics' long history, topped the sales charts for the second month in a row as the best-selling Games product to comics specialty retailers in January.
